Hypnotherapy vs counselling vs coaching: which one do you actually need?

If you know something needs to change but you're not sure who to call, you're not alone. The wellbeing world is full of overlapping titles, and choosing wrong costs you time, money, and momentum. So here's the simplified version, including where my own work sits.

Counselling: understanding what happened

Counselling and psychotherapy are primarily about processing. You talk, a trained professional helps you explore, and over time you develop insight into your feelings and your past. It's brilliant for grief, trauma, relationship breakdown, and times when you need a safe space to make sense of something painful. It tends to be open-ended, and the pace is gentle by design.

The limitation, for some people, is that insight doesn't always equal change. Plenty of my clients arrive saying some version of the same thing: I know exactly why I'm like this, I've talked about it for years, and I still do it.

Coaching: building what's next

Coaching is future-focused. A coach helps you clarify goals, spot what's in the way, and take action. It's ideal when you're fundamentally okay but want more: a career change, better leadership, a business off the ground. Good coaching assumes you're resourceful and treats you that way.

The limitation is the mirror image of counselling's. If the thing in your way is a deep pattern, self-sabotage, anxiety, a stubborn belief that you're not enough, then goal-setting and accountability alone can feel like pushing against a locked door. You know what to do. You just can't seem to make yourself do it.

Hypnotherapy: changing the pattern itself

Hypnotherapy works directly with the unconscious, which is where habits, emotional responses, and beliefs actually live. Rather than only talking about a pattern or setting goals around it, it changes the pattern at source. It tends to be brief and focused, which suits people who want movement rather than years of sessions.

And therapeutic coaching, which is where I sit

My work combines the last two, with neuroscience woven through. We use cognitive hypnotherapy to get underneath the anxiety, self-doubt, and limiting beliefs and shift them at the root, and coaching to build forward from there: the clarity, the confidence, the actual life you want. Root-cause work plus future-building, in one place.

As a rough guide: if you're processing something painful from the past, start with counselling. If you're thriving and want structured momentum, a coach is your person. If you keep going round in the same circles and knowing better hasn't fixed it, that's the work I do.

Still not sure which you need? Don't worry, that's what my free intro call is for. I'll give you an honest steer, even if the honest steer is that I'm not the right fit.
