What happens in a hypnotherapy session? What it feels like and what to expect.

Most people's picture of hypnotherapy comes from TV: swinging watches, clicking fingers, someone waking up with no memory of the last hour. The reality is so much more ordinary, and so much more useful. Here's exactly what to expect, because feeling nervous about the unknown shouldn't be the thing that stops you getting help.

Before anything else, we talk

A first session starts with a proper conversation. What's going on, when it started, how it shows up in your life, and what you want instead. In cognitive hypnotherapy this matters enormously, because the work is built around how your particular pattern operates, not a generic script. Plenty of useful change happens in this part alone. Clients regularly have lightbulb moments before we've done anything that looks remotely like hypnosis.

What trance actually feels like

Trance is not sleep and it's not unconsciousness. It's a natural state of focused, relaxed attention that you already drift into every day: absorbed in a good film, driving a familiar route on autopilot, staring out of a train window while your mind wanders. In a session, I simply guide you into that state deliberately, usually through relaxation and visualisation.

You'll hear everything. You can talk, move in your chair, scratch your nose, open your eyes if you want to. You are in complete control. You cannot be made to do anything against your will, and you can't get stuck. Most clients describe it as deeply calm, a bit like the moments just before sleep, while remaining completely aware.

The work itself

In that relaxed state, your unconscious is more open to learning, so this is where we do the real work: revisiting the experiences that taught your brain its unhelpful patterns, updating the learnings it made, and rehearsing the calmer, more confident responses you'd rather have. I often use visualisation here, because your brain doesn't fully distinguish between something vividly imagined and something experienced. It treats rehearsal as evidence.

Afterwards we chat about what came up, and you'll usually leave with something to practise between sessions. You'll feel relaxed, sometimes a little reflective, and completely yourself. You can drive, go back to work, carry on with your day.

How many sessions it takes

Cognitive hypnotherapy is a brief therapy. For a specific block, my 90-minute Breakthrough Sessions are designed to get to the root fast. For deeper work on confidence, anxiety, and self-belief, most clients work with me across a bespoke programme of sessions over a few months. Either way, the aim is always the same: getting you to the point where you don't need me.

If there's a question I haven't answered, that's exactly what my free intro call is for. Book a call, I'd love to help you feel like the best version of you.

Why gratitude works when affirmations don't
